It’s been a while since I stayed in an airbnb, so staying in one during my trip to Warsaw felt almost virginal. It was exciting in a peculiar way. Especially since the one I’d picked had such a unique decor. Hellinistic, someone in the comments had called it, although from what I could tell in the pics online the only Greek looking item in the place was a portrait bust of somebody I presume to be famous. It looked like a floppy haired Matthew McConaughey in his younger days but I highly doubted it would be him.
It was a bit hard to find the place but it wasn’t the hosts fault. The apartments brand new and sometimes it takes the GPS a while before it registers new streets. So it’s probably more accurate to blame my old phone. Each phone I’ve had has always seemed to be about five years old, a bit like the shirt I’m wearing right now actually. I just can’t be bothered with keeping up with whatever the new thing is out lately. ‘Buy this buy that’ Oh sod off, the thing I’ve already got is perfectly fine. None of us need ‘more stuff,’ where do they think all your old stuff goes when you throw it away? It doesn’t just magically disappear.
I’m going of on a tangent here.
Ok so I found the apartment in the end. My first impression was that it actually seemed better than I expected, but it had been such a long day all I really wanted was a cup of tea and forty winks so I waited until morning to start enjoying my time there properly.
When the daylight poured in the next day the bust looked more like Disney’s hercules than Matthew McConaughey when I actually got up close to the thing. I still have no idea who it’s actually supposed to be. Maybe someone can tell me in the comments. I’m guessing a Greek philosopher, maybe a young parmenides?
I suppose the plants and other foliage dotted around the place also gave it that mediterianian feel, especially the tranquil balcony. If I’d stayed at the apartment during summer I could imagine myself sitting out there with some grapes and a glass of Ouzo. It had me I hoping to find some Greek style yogurt in the fridge as a welcome gift but instead I found a load of ketvhup. That’s ok, I’m not a huge fan of yoghurt anyway.
All Greek things aside I actually liked the huge pictures adorning the walls more than anything. The hot air balloon, the beautiful girls face, the graffiti style painting on the wall, all cool stuff. It’s the type of artwork I’d like on my own wall but I’ve never cared enough to make the effort. The nearest I’ve come to anything like that is buying a medium sized picture of Times Square, New York during a spontaneous trip to IKEA for some of those meatballs they do.
Now I’m thinking about it, if I was to see the same overt paintings every day in my own home I’d possibly get bored of it after a few months. As this was a short term stay I didn’t have to worry about that and had a delightful time at the apartment, but it won’t be the only place I’ll be staying in Warsaw. Next I’ll be in what looks to be the most peaceful looking apartment Warsaw has to offer.
